FOODS I

Course Outline

1 Quarter Block (1203) .50 Credit

Elective: Grades 10 - 12

This course is designed to provide the student with basic skills in food preparation. It’s a hands-on class where students learn teamwork as they prepare a variety of recipes and gain knowledge about foods and nutrition. This course is a prerequisite course for all other food courses. Foods I at the ninth grade level satisfies this prerequisite.

ADVANCED FOODS

Elective: Grades 10 - 12

Prerequisite: Foods I

Learning Area: Read, Listen, View

Content Standard: Technical Reading, Listening & Viewing

This course is designed for students to explore more advanced cooking methods. Some areas covered in food preparation are:  soups, appetizers, salads, vegetables, main dishes, fancy desserts, and candy making.


FISH & GAME COOKING

Course Outline

1 Quarter Block .50 Credit

Elective: Grades 10 - 12

Prerequisite: Foods I

This course is designed for anyone with an interest in learning to cook fish and game. We will also learn to plan meals and prepare foods to accompany the fish or game. The class relies on donations of fish and game from students for use in labs.

INTERNATIONAL FOODS I

Course Outline

1 Quarter Block .50 Credit

Elective: Grades 10 - 12

Prerequisite: Foods I

Learning Area: Inquiry & Research

Content Standard: Issue Analysis

Students taking this course will gain an understanding and an appreciation of the foods and customs of various cultures of the world through food preparation. Some of the cuisines to be explored will include Mexico, Italy, Greece, Japan, Germany and Africa. A field trip to an ethnic restaurant will be included.


INTERNATIONAL FOODS II

Course Outline

1 Quarter Block .50 Credit

Elective: Grades 10 - 12

Learning Area: Inquiry & Research

Content Standard: Issue Analysis

Students will explore the foods, family, and culture of China, France, Scandinavia, India, Spain, and Thailand. Food preparation techniques along with family and cultural customs will be discussed as they relate to each country. students will have the opportunity to visit the Festival of Nations. International Foods I is not required before taking this class.

PERSONAL NUTRITION & TRAINING

1 Quarter Block .50 Credit ** NEW**

Elective: Grades 10-12

Prerequisite: 10th grade PE

This course is designed for students who want to improve their athletic performance or their overall personal fitness levels.  Participants will learn how to get the most out of their bodies and physical performance by creating a personal program that helps them assess their current eating habits and nutritional intake, while also assessing their current fitness levels. Students will then set, and work to attain, nutritional and physical fitness goals.

Participants in this course will meet every other day in the foods lab for the nutrition component and opposite days in the gym for the training component.
