WORLD LANGUAGE
MISSION
To
prepare students to communicate using another language and to build the skills
and awareness needed to understand and effectively interact with other cultures
in professional and personal settings.
BELIEFS/PHILOSOPHY
Learning
another language:
- Improves
a student’s capacity to reason, conceptualize, analyze, and solve
problems, as well as increase proficiency in his or her own language.
- Improves
standardized test scores and performance in other subjects.
- Increases
the ability to interact at home and abroad (via the internet, travel,
jobs, academics) in a global community and helps to build political,
economic, and social skills.
- Builds
community by creating empathy and an understanding of other cultures, as
well as our own.
- Prepares
students for intermediate and advanced college language courses. This can save a student time and
thousands of dollars in college tuition.
- Improves
Proficiency in student’s own language.
OUTCOMES/GOALS
Students
will:
- Use
the language skills of listening, reading, writing and speaking or signing
to communicate effectively with others in a multilingual or global
community.
- Understand
the relevance and value of learning a language.
- Learn
strategies, language structures, and patterns that help transfer learned
concepts to new situations.
- Recognize
similarities and appreciate differences between cultures that will
facilitate the examination of attitudes, beliefs, and values.
