German 1 and Honors German 1

Text: Deutsch Aktuell 1

German 1 is a semester long introductory course in which students learn about the German language and its culture.  In this class, students will learn basic vocabulary and grammar, including the present and future tenses; the nominative and accusative cases; and basic word order.  Students will learn to read, write, speak and listen in German.  Upon completion of this course, students should be able to create and comprehend simple written and spoken German.  Level 1 course instruction is conducted substantially in German.  Student use of German will be expected with an end goal to use it 75% of the time.

 

Honors German 1 offers an introduction to the German language, including all the material taught in German 1, but with an enriched curriculum to offer a students a higher level of challenge.  Students who choose to enroll in an Honors course should expect to commit the additional time and effort necessary to meet rigorous course requirements.  Please see the CHS registration guide for specific policies regarding registration and enrollment in this class.

German 2 and Honors German 2

Text: Deutsch Aktuell 1 and Deutsch Aktuell 2

German 2 is a semester long course in which students continue to learn about the German language and its culture.  Building on vocabulary and grammar learned in German 1, students will increase German proficiency in reading, writing, speaking and listening.  Grammar covered includes: present, past and future tense; extensive work on the nominative, accusative, dative and genitive cases; and word order.  Upon completion of this course, students should be able to understand and communicate in written and spoken German with increased fluency.  Level 2 course instruction is conducted almost exclusively in German.  Student use of German will be expected with a goal to use it 95% of the time.

 

Honors German 2 offers all the material taught in German 2, but with an enriched curriculum to offer a students a higher level of challenge.  Students who choose to enroll in an Honors course should expect to commit the additional time and effort necessary to meet rigorous course requirements.  Please see the CHS registration guide for specific policies regarding registration and enrollment in this class.

German 3 and Honors German 3

Text: Deutsch Aktuell 3

German 3 is a semester long course in which students work to further internalize the German language and understand its culture, building mastery on previously learned material.  We will begin working with the more advanced elements of the language to create and interpret complex expressions of thought in both written and spoken German.  We will concentrate heavily on developing and strengthening reading and writing skills.  Grammar covered includes: all verb tenses, moods and voices; all cases; and word order in increasingly complex sentence structures.  Level 3 course instruction is conducted almost exclusively in German.  Student use of German will be expected with a goal to use it 95% of the time or more. 

 

Honors German 3 offers all the material taught in German 3, but with an enriched curriculum to offer a students a higher level of challenge.  Students who choose to enroll in an Honors course should expect to commit the additional time and effort necessary to meet rigorous course requirements.  Please see the CHS registration guide for specific policies regarding registration and enrollment in this class.

Intermediate German 201:

A college level course offered in conjunction with Minnesota State University, Mankato

Intermediate German 201 is a semester long course which offers a continuation of German study following German 3.  It is offered at CHS in conjunction with the German department at Minnesota State University, Mankato.  Students who apply and qualify for this course under application requirements can earn 4 college credits through MSU, Mankato upon its successful completion.  Intermediate German 201 students work to strengthen German language fluency and deepen cultural understanding. We will focus on building competency in reading, writing, speaking and listening through our exploration of a variety of communicative topics and contemporary German texts and film. Students will also participate in a comprehensive study of German grammar. Class is conducted exclusively in German. Student use of German will be expected with a goal to use it 95% of the time or more. 

Students who choose to enroll in Intermediate German 201 should expect to commit the additional time and effort necessary to meet rigorous course requirements. 

 

Students wishing to do so will have the opportunity to take the German Language Advanced Placement test in the spring.  Please see the CHS registration guide for specific policies regarding registration and enrollment in this class.

German Literature

Students in German Literature build on all their German language skills and expand their cultural knowledge through guided and cooperative exploration of German literary texts.  These texts, by various well-known authors, will include a survey of poetry, plus other selected texts which may include short stories, film, plays and/or novellas.  Vocabulary and grammar topics will be covered as they relate to our work with the course readings.  Class is conducted exclusively in German.  Student use of German will be expected with a goal to use it 95% of the time or more.
