Educators in District 112 believe that....

  • All students must be engaged in rigorous and relevant course work;

  • All students can learn………a lot;

  • Rigorous and relevant instruction requires backward planning, meaningful interdisciplinary connections and real world application.  A critical element of instruction includes a balanced assessment system, including formative, summative and common assessments.

Teachers in District 112 ensure that...

  • District standards (reflecting best practice, state and national standards) are placed in all courses and aligned within and across levels;

  • They differentiate curriculum and instruction to meet the needs of all students;

  •  Literacy skills are embedded in all their courses.  Literacy skills include reading, writing, academic vocabulary, information technology, speaking.

Professional Learning Communities

District 112’s three-year plan for professional development provides educators with job-embedded training in the content knowledge and instructional strategies needed for our students to be competitive in the 21st Century. In 2007-08 professional learning communities (PLCs) will be arranged by department and facilitated by each department's content specialist.  For this year, professional learning communities will be embedded into the “late start” schedule and professional development workshop days.

2007-08 Professional Development Goal

All the 6-12 professional learning communities will learn to use the Understanding by Design (UbD) backwards design protocol to design curriculum units.  To this end, each member of a professional learning community will create at least one unit that demonstrates his/her understanding of the UbD lesson planning design by including the following elements:

1.      Clearly identified content standards, enduring understandings, essential questions, key knowledge and skills students will acquire in the unit;

2.      Rigorous and relevant summative assessment

3.      Specific formative assessments that inform instruction

4.      Specific teaching and learning activities that will equip students to engage with, develop, and demonstrate the desired understandings.

What are Content Specialists?

Content specialists are a cadre of “coaches or trainers” who are responsible for receiving training and presenting and supporting the training of a group of teachers (professional learning community/department).  The content specialists will work with the professional development coordinators to plan and implement their building’s professional development program.    Content specialists meet monthly on Wednesdays.
