READING FOR PLEASURE

STUDENT / PARENT / TEACHER READING CONTRACT

 

The following contract is to be read, agreed upon and signed by all of the above-mentioned parties.  The contract is good for the 2005 – 2006 school year and may be re-negotiated at any time based on request.

pledge to read ________________________________________ hour/s per week on my own – which means outside of school time.  I will turn in a weekly reading coupon to Mrs. Garcia that states what I read and how much time I spent reading.  I realize that reading is one quarter of my language arts final grade for each quarter/grading period.  In order to grow as readers, research recommends a MINIMUM of a ten minute per day commitment for at least six of the seven week days.  Consequently, I challenge ALL readers to chose AT LEAST one hour per week.

 

I understand that I am responsible for a quarterly book talk/presentation, which is based on the book that I choose for reading for pleasure.  Sometimes Mrs. Garcia will provide guidelines for the type of book to be chosen.

 

I understand that participation in the Accelerated Reading Program is an option that I can choose to replace up to two book talks/presentations.   The AR Program holds all tests taken, so you will not be able to test for a book you read and tested for as a sixth grader or earlier.

Students will have their reading coupon due on the SAME DAY EACH WEEK OF THE SCHOOL YEAR (with possible adjustments for shortened weeks, holidays and field trips).  There will be penalties for late reading coupons.  If the coupon system does not function for your family, parents/guardians may call my voice mail to vouch for their student's time for the week, however the student is still responsible for turning in their summary.  Additionally, parents/guardians may e-mail me vouching for the student's time for the week, but again, the student is responsible for their summary.  Finally, hand written coupons will also be accepted.
