Blue Caribou Family Policies

2007-2008

The following policies are intended to assist students and families in their understanding of certain expectations that all Blue Caribou teachers have in common.

THE PLANNER

All students are expected to have their planner filled out with the week’s assignments to be checked by their adviser during Hawk Time each Tuesday.  They are expected to use their planner on a daily basis to keep track of homework assignments, deadlines, updates and the like.

ABSENCES

It is school policy that a student has one day plus a day to make up work from an excused absence.  If the absence is more than a day or two, please call the office to arrange for assignments so you don’t fall too far behind.  Students must report to class prior to and immediately following band lessons, extra chorus practices, rehearsals and so on.  If a student skips a class, they forfeit credit for any activities, tests, quizzes, daily work, etc. from that class.

HOMEWORK/PAPER HEADINGS

All work that is turned must have both a first and last name printed legibly on the assignment.  In addition, the student must include their class hour and subject.  It is also helpful to include the assignment title and a date.  For example:

CHEATING

If a student is caught cheating/plagiarizing on daily work, no credit for the work will be given and the student may be required to do an alternate activity.  Parents will be contacted.  If a student is caught contributing their work to the cheater, their work will only receive partial credit and parents will be contacted.

If the situation is a test, on a first offence the student will be allowed an opportunity to complete a retake.  On subsequent offences, there will be student, teacher, counselor or dean and parent meeting to plan further action.  If a student is caught contributing their test to the cheater, their work will only receive partial credit and parents will be contacted.

HOW AM I DOING?

Reports of progress will be shared at mid-quarter, end of quarter and upon request.  Also don't forget to use Parent Portal to check progress.  Parent Portal is updated approximately every 24 hours.

Some Blue Caribou teachers will send weekly e-mail updates on class assignments, deadlines, calendar issues and the like, others use voice mail or a web site as a homework update tool.

The daily planner can also be used as a regular communication tool, especially between the Hawk Time adviser and home.

If you want personal questions addressed via e-mail, please initiate contact and we will be happy to answer within the next twenty-four to forty-eight hours.

WHAT IF MY WORK IS LATE?

You are expected to turn in all assignments, projects, and homework on the assigned date unless PRIOR arrangements have been made with the teacher.  If you know you are going to be gone, especially if it will be for an extended period of time (3+ days) you should get work done ahead of time or be ready to turn it in upon return.

Any work that is turned in after the due date may receive partial credit depending on individual teacher criteria and your individual circumstances.

Cut off dates are used to help you stay on track with current work and not get burdened down with work carrying over from one marking period to another.  Teachers will post cut off dates in advance of marking periods.

COPIES

Teachers make one copy of a worksheet or handout for each student. The cost is prohibitive to keep making copies of “lost” sheets. Therefore, a “Master Copy” of each handout will be posted in the classroom where the assignment given, and if a student loses the original he or she can hand-copy the information without penalty, provided it is not late.

When a student is absent, the teacher will make sure that the student receives all copies of work assigned during the absence, but with the volume of absent students it is helpful if the student reminds the teacher to give them their work.

PASSES

Students are given eight passes per quarter. These passes are to be used in emergencies and in unexpected situations, at the discretion of the teacher. The students’ schedules are such that ample time is allotted for them to get to their lockers and the restrooms during the day. Like all people who live by a schedule, this requires planning and thinking ahead. The occasional unplanned-for event can be solved by using one of the passes.

If a student’s passes are lost, they will not be replaced until the next quarter. Small rewards will be given in Hawk Time for unused passes at the end of each quarter.
