Tips for Success

Welcome to a new school year at Chaska Middle School West!  My name is Kristie Olson, and I am excited about the opportunity to be your language arts teacher.  I graduated from Minnesota State University, Mankato with a B.S. in English/Speech Education and currently live in Shakopee, MN.

Most of eighth grade language arts is designed around thematic units.  It consists of challenging and fun reading, writing, and oral communication activities.  Students will be collecting and storing  selections of their work in a writing/reading portfolio that will remain in the classroom until the end of the school year and are available for viewing at conferences.

I look forward to a fantastic  year! Please feel free to contact me at any time.

Hawktime:

The purpose of the advisor/advisee program is to provide each child in the school with the security of having one adult that knows him/her on a personal basis.  During this 15-minute period each morning, your child will participate in specific weekly activities.  Together as a group, we strive to learn about each other and focus on community service projects.

As your child's advisor, I will:

Act as a liaison between your child’s teachers and you, the parent/guardian.

Facilitate conferences, which will involve both you and your child.

Be available if you have questions or concerns.

The best time to contact me is between 8:30 and 9:20 am or after 2:30 pm.  You may call me at 556-7400, or leave a voice message at 556-7571 if I am not available.  Finally, the easiest way to contact me is by email: olsonk@district112.org.  I will return your message as soon as possible!  I look forward to working with your family this school year!

Expectations:

TARDY POLICY: Students are expected to be on time, in their seats, and prepared at the beginning of class. A student who arrives late to class or without required materials will be expected to stay after class. Three tardies will result in a lunch detention.  Parent(s)/guardian(s) will be notified if tardies persist.

LATE WORK:  Daily assignments and class presentations that are turned in late will receive half credit.  Large projects, papers and journals will be deducted one grade for each day they are late.  STUDENTS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR GETTING MAKE-UP WORK WHEN THEY ARE ABSENT.

PLANNER: Students are expected to bring a planner to class everyday.  No hall passes will be issued without a planner.  Assignments will be updated every Monday during Hawktime and are also posted in the classroom for reference.

JOURNAL:  Students will write in their journal for the first two quarters of the school year.  A grade will be given based on the quality and quantity of the student's work.  Journals will be collected every other Friday.
