History Day

What is History Day?

History Day is an exciting educational program that is designed for students in grades 6-12.  Throughout the school year, students conduct research of primary and secondary resources to prepare presentations based on an annual theme.  History Day contests reinforce classroom teaching by rewarding students of all abilities for their individual initiative and cooperative learning.  Students grow academically and intellectually as they integrate social studies, arts, sciences, and other disciplines into a historical presentation.

  Who will participate?

All 8th Grade students at CMSW will be required to create a project for Social Studies class.  Students will be encouraged to enter the school wide competition, but it will NOT be required.  Students who place in the top three for their category at the school competition will proceed onto regional competition.

Competitions

School Contest:  February

Regional Contest:  March

State Contest:   Late April or early May

National History Day Contest:   June

The top two finishers in each category at the state contest become eligible to advance to the national contest held at the University of Maryland at College Park.

Project Categories
Documentary- Students will develop media-based presentations.  Students may create documentaries using slides, film, videos, and/or computers.

Exhibit- Exhibits are designed to display visual and written information on topics in an attractive and understandable manner.  They are similar to exhibits found in a museum.

Paper- Research paper involving three areas:  collecting information, organizing the information, and presenting it to the reader in a clear and interesting fashion.

Performance- The performance category can be one of the most exciting ways to participate in History Day, since it is the only category in which students present their research live.
