Boat Hull design
Design Brief: Design and build a boat hull that will travel 10 feet the fastest using the power of wind.
Design criteria:
*Boat must be no wider then 3 1/2 inches
*Boat can be no longer than 8 inches
*Boat can be built out of any material
*Bottom of the boat can not sink more than 1 1/2 inches
Grading:
You will be graded on design, research and distance traveled.
Design/craftsmanship---20
Research---------------20
Distance---------------10
*If the boat reaches the finish line, then you will receive all 10 points. If it does not finish in 15 seconds, you will be given 1 point for each foot traveled.
Research questions and design: Answer the following questions by researching your boat hull in the library.
1. Name three types of hulls.
-a.
-b.
-c.
2. What are the characteristics of the 3 hulls from question one. (speed, stability, etc?)
- a.
- b.
- c.
3. List 3 purposes of boats.
- a.
- b.
- c.
4. What is the purpose of a strake?
5. What is a chine?
6. On the back of this sheet, draw a picture of your hull design. Include in your drawing a front view, top view and side view. Dimension all parts and include a materials list. Describe why you chose this design.
Mousetrap car
A mousetrap car is a vehicle that uses a mousetrap for its propulsion. When designing your mousetrap, there are several things to consider, such as, weight, bearings, size of wheels and length of trap. Your goal is to build a mousetrap vehicle that will travel the furthest. The following things must be considered in order to build a successful mousetrap vehicle: Body construction, wheel construction, mousetrap construction. Complete this worksheet and turn in with your mousetrap.
Design Brief:
Work in groups of 2 and design a vehicle powered by a mousetrap that will travel a far distance.
Step 1
Make a sketch of the body of your vehicle. Use graph paper and include a front view and top view along with dimensions. Make sure to draw your vehicle to scale. (This sketch should be done without the wheels). Include the location of the mousetrap.
Step 2
Make a sketch of the tires of your vehicle. Use graph paper and include a front view and top view along with dimensions. Make sure to draw your vehicle to scale. (This sketch should be done without the wheels).
Step 3
List the materials that you will be using for:
Body of vehicle----------------Wheels---------------Mousetrap
Step 4
Collect materials for building the vehicles.
Step 5
Build your vehicle.
Step 6
Race your vehicle.-------- Distance_____________ft
45-50 ft = 20===== 20-24 ft = 15
40-44 ft = 19===== 15-19 ft = 14
35-39 ft = 18===== 10-14 ft = 13
30-34 ft = 17===== 5- 9 ft = 12
25-29 ft = 16===== 0- 4 ft = 11
Step 7
Grade your vehicle--------Construction__________\50
Total___________\70

Mouse Trap Car Research
Print and attach three pictures of three different Mouse Trap Cars. Must be from different web sites.
How will you use leverage to build your mouse trap car?
What are some ways you will cut down on friction?
List three types of materials you could use to build the frame (main part or body) of your car? Which material would you prefer?
List three materials you could use for the wheels? Which would you prefer?
What have you learned about building a Mouse Trap Car? (Use the back if necessary)
