How does the Rock Fest work?

As schools begin to add rock bands to their school and extra curricular schedules, we are running a rock festival modeled after the common format of jazz festivals.  Each rock band that is selected will perform 15 minutes worth of music.  This will be followed by a 30-minute period where our clinicians will work with the band.   Students are also invited to watch other bands perform.    Each band will receive a recording of their performance and clinic, and each student will receive a certificate of participation.  Outstanding musician and soloist awards will also be chosen after the day’s performances.

Costs and Requirements

The application fee for each band is $30.  Every band that enters must be accompanied to the festival by a music teacher or adult that is working with or sponsoring the group.  Each bands' members must be currently enrolled in a Minnesota middle or high school.  One member must be an active member in their school music program.  Band members are responsible for bringing their own instruments except drum set (guitars, bass guitars, keyboards, etc.)  Microphones, amps and a drum set will be provided.  There will be 30 minutes allotted for performance which includes set-up and take-down time.  There will be stage hands to assist in this process.  There will be rooms for storage during the day.  These rooms will either be locked or watched by festival assistants for safekeeping.  Song selections may be originals or covers.  A lyric sheet must be provided for the adjudicators prior to performance.
