ELL Class Information:

Beginning Class (Grades 6-8):

  • Students learn basic survival vocabulary as they adapt to their new English-speaking environment.  Some highlighted topics they learn are: school, family, weather, emotions, food, colors, shapes, transportation, and animals.  Students also practice listening, speaking, reading and writing skills with these new vocabulary words.

Intermediate and Advanced 6th Grade Classes:

  • Students continue building and practicing their skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening.  Students use the Scott Foresman reading series, writers’ workshop, spelling, and novels throughout the year.  Various writing and reading assignments are done throughout the year with computers.

Intermediate Classes (Grades 7-8):

  • Students continue building and practicing their skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening.  Students use the Voices in Literature Bronze and Silver reading series, writers’ workshop, spelling, and novels throughout the year.  Various writing and reading assignments are done throughout the year with computers.

Advanced Classes (Grades 7-8):

  • Students polish their skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening.  Students use the Multicultural Literature reading series, writers’ workshop, spelling, and novels throughout the year.  Assorted writing and reading assignments are done throughout the year with computers.

ELL Social Studies (Grades 7-8):

  • Beginning and intermediate ELL students learn social studies skills in addition to necessary English vocabulary.  Students learn such topics as geography, American and world history from the textbooks World History and You Books 1 and 2 (Ancient Civilizations and United States’ history).

 

Announcements:

  • ELL Homework Club is held Tuesday from 2:30-4:00pm in the ELL room.
  • Conferences will be held in October and in February.
  • The end of the quarters are:  Quarter 1 – November 4, Quarter 2 – January 14, Quarter 3 – March 23, Quarter 4 – June 8.
