Enrichment Reading

Enrichment Reading is for students who need to increase word identification (phonics), comprehension and vocabulary learning. Enrichment Reading classes focus on comprehension, vocabulary, reading fluency, increased awareness of language patterns, and writing in response to text.

Enrichment Readers will work on developing the phonemic awareness, decoding (phonics) word attack skills, knowledge of spelling rules, and strategies in reading comprehension to increase their basic reading skills and become independent readers.

6th Grade:

All students take the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessment (MCA) and the NWEA Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) tests in 5th grade. Using these scores to identify students with potential difficulties, the reading specialist will further evaluate the needs of each child, conference with classroom teachers and determine placement.

7th Grade:

All students take the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessment (MCA) and the NWEA Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) tests in 6th grade. Based on each student's individual score and the recommendation of your child's sixth grade teachers, student's can be placed in Enrichment Reading or Effective Reading. Students in the 15th percentile and below may qualify for 1/2 year everyday of Enrichment Reading. Students who score between the 16th and 40th percentile may qualify for placement in an Effective Reading class

8th Grade:

All students take the Minnesota Comprehensive Assessment (MCA) and the NWEA Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) tests in 7th grade. Based on each student's individual score and the recommendation of your child's seventh grade teachers, student's can be placed in Enrichment Reading or Effective Reading.

Note: A percentile different than a percentage. A percentage tells you the number correct out of the total number. Percentile shows your child's placement based on all students who have taken that particular assessment. If your child is within in the fortieth to sixtieth percentile, they are within the average range of all students who took that assessment that year.

The Five Key Reading Strategies of Our Programs

*phonemic awareness

*phonics knowledge

*reading fluency

*vocabulary development

*comprehension strategies

Enrichment Reading is a supportive class. Our goal is to work with students to improve decoding skills, vocabulary development and reading strategies. We plan most assignments to be completed within the class time. However, if students do not use the class time effectively, they will need to take work home or if there is incomplete work then they will need to take work home.

We encourage and appreciate a student commitment to work at home to develop vocabulary, practice fluency and read a minimum of 20 minutes each day!! A commitment to these three elements will significantly elevate your child's reading progress.
