What Parents of Strong Readers Do: |

Before
Reading: ·Check
background knowledge by inquiring what is already known about
the subject and what experiences students can share about it. ·Set
purpose for reading
and
discuss the key questions they need to find answers for as they read. ·Select
specific strategies to
use to comprehend effectively. ·Skim/scan
the chapter by reading the title, subtitles, captions. Turn headings
into questions. Read first and last paragraph and ask students to
make predictions.

During
Reading: ·Look
for key words and discuss key words and concepts. Ask students
to watch for key words. ·Monitor
understanding by highlighting key words found as you read. Use sticky
notes to mark important sections and use to take notes. Metacognate
or talk to themselves during reading. ·Question
internally
to check for understanding. ·Synthesize
thoughts,
ideas and concepts by continuously summarizing and identifying main ideas
by putting ideas into your own words.

After
Reading:
·Clarify
by
checking with someone else. Talk
about what you learned in the reading and compare notes. This could be
done in large group or share with individuals/small group. ·Distinguish
between
relevant and irrelevant ideas ·Evaluate
Were
your reading goals achieved? Did you understand what you read? ·Summarize
in your own words out loud or in your head restate the
main ideas of the selection and the events or examples given to support
the ideas. ·Reflect
on
and personalize the text, integrate ideas and understandings with prior
knowledge.
