Program Purpose and Goals

Purpose

The purpose of the reading program is to increase students’ reading level in the areas of:
  • Phonemic Awareness-recognizing that sounds make words and that individual sounds are used to create words
  • Phonics-understanding the relationships between written letters and spoken sounds, recognizing familiar words accurately and automatically, and decoding (sounding-out) new words.
  • Reading Fluency-the ability to read a text accurately and quickly, while effectively processing meaning
  • Vocabulary-learning the meaning and pronunciation of words
  • Comprehension-developing a variety of strategies to understand, remember and communicate what is read

These goals correlate with the "Five Essential Components of Reading" outlined in the current legislation Law - P.L.107-110 (H.R.1) Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA).

Goals

Our number one goal is for students to become successful lifelong, effective readers. Our class curriculum focuses on developing the skills needed to help students identify their reading strengths and how to use these strengths to develop weaker areas.  We also identify and develop skills needed to successfully meet the Minnesota Language Arts Standards.
