School year brings new programs, improved facilities
The 2007-08 school year began September 4 with an enrollment of
approximately 8,700 students. As these students returned, they found
some changes and new programs...a few will be apparent and others,
though important, may not be so easy to see. Here are few examples.
- Reading Rangers - A new program begins this fall aimed at students in grades 1 and 2 who may benefit from additional small group reading instruction. This program will be available at each elementary school.
- Marching Band - The uniforms have arrived and we're ready to begin! Chaska High's new band director, Tim Bekler, is an experienced marching band director eager to start this new program. The band's first performance will be at the Open House for new students scheduled August 29. Look for the band to perform during half-time at several football games this fall.
- Expanded Orchestra Program - The orchestra program expands this fall to allow the program to become an in-school music choice at the middle schools instead of an after-school activity. High school orchestra students will also see expanded staffing.
- Increased Professional Development for Teachers - The School Board is investing in the training and development of our outstanding teaching staff. Each elementary school will have a teacher on special assignment who will assist fellow staff members in acquiring the latest skills based on current education research. Our middle schools and high schools also will use additional time and resources for teachers and administrators to plan and receive training as the re-designed secondary program moves forward.
- LCD Projectors - This is the first year of a two-year plan to place an LCD projector into each District 112 classroom.
- Refurbished Swimming Pool - The District's only pool (CMS East) is being refurbished to meet current competition standards. When it reopens this fall, it will be updated and deeper, meeting current requirements for use of elevated starting blocks.
- Resurfaced Tennis Courts - The middle school campus tennis courts will be resurfaced and two additional courts will be added. The courts at Chanhassen Elementary have been resurfaced thanks to the City of Chanhassen. The courts at Pioneer Ridge were resurfaced as preventative maintenance.
