NewsBoard will review 6th grade center concept at April 24 work sessionThe District 112 School Board will devote it April 24 work session to reviewing a proposal to create a 6th grade center and two middle schools serving grades 7 and 8 rather than three schools using the current grade 6-8 configuration. A change has been raised by a group of parents as a result of recent attendance boundary discussions. The parent group would prefer this new configuration to the 6-8 system currently in use and recommended by district staff. The current proposal from the Boundary Task Force is based on direction given them by the district and it continues the elementary to middle school "feeder school" concept currently in place. Under their plan, kids from two elementary schools (Chaska Elementary and Chanhassen Elementary) would attend Pioneer Ridge Middle School. The kids attending the other elementary schools would continue to feed into the same middle schools as they do today. Because elementary and middle school boundaries are based on "neighborhood" boundaries and change every few years as new schools are added, while high school boundaries need to remain stable over a long period of time, each middle school in the current boundary plan would serve at least some students from each of the two high schools. The Board will discuss the parent suggestion regarding a "sixth grade center" alternative during a work session following the regular Board meeting. The regular meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. in the Board Room of the District Education Center, 11 Peavey Road, in Chaska. The work session is expected to begin at approximately 7:00 p.m. While it is not customary to do so in a work session setting, the Board will allow a portion of the time at this particular session to be set aside to hear remarks from parents concerning the 6th center idea. | |||||||
