Summer Reading

Dear Parents,

As we head into summer break, we want to encourage and support your child’s love of reading. At Eastern Carver County Public Schools, we believe in the transformative power of books to spark curiosity, expand knowledge, and nurture imagination. Reading is not only key to academic growth; it’s also a wonderful way for children to explore new ideas, places, and experiences.

This summer, we invite you to focus on the joy of reading together. Reading aloud as a family, helping sound out tricky words, and modeling fluent reading all contribute to your child’s confidence and growth as a reader.

Another important goal of summer reading is to build background knowledge and strengthen comprehension. You can support this by:

  • Talking about unfamiliar words
  • Retelling the story together
  • Discussing favorite parts or characters—and why they’re favorites
  • Reflecting on the most important part of the story and why it matters to your child

For book suggestions and activity ideas, we recommend exploring Reading Rockets’ Summer Reading resources, which include Reading Adventure Packs and Summer Reading Booklists:

Most of the Reading Rocket’s recommended books are available at your local library.

To help establish a joyful summer reading routine, consider these tips:

  • Encourage your child to find a cozy spot to read.
  • Let them choose books that reflect their interests—whether it’s graphic novels, nonfiction, picture books, or chapter books.
  • Participate in your local library’s summer reading program or challenge.
  • Set aside dedicated time for family reading—just 15–20 minutes a day makes a difference.

Reading together builds essential skills while creating meaningful memories and lifelong habits. Thank you for supporting your child’s learning at home. If you have questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out. We're here to help!
