Wellness

Eastern Carver County Schools is committed to the well being of both staff and students. To support our wellness activities and initiatives, we have a wellness team we refer to as Thrive! At the district level, we have a district health council with representatives from each school, community agencies, and parents. We meet quarterly to discuss goals of the district and schools, as well as provide opportunities for continued education on well being topics. Each school has a wellness committee that assesses the needs of their building, and develops goals and activities to work on during the school year.

VisionTo create and sustain healthy learning and work environments in Eastern Carver County Schools. Guided by best practice resources, we will build the foundation for life-long learning by improving the health and wellbeing of staff and students.

Mission Together, building a culture of health in Eastern Carver County Schools.

The Wellness Policy has its roots in the 2004 Child Nutrition and WIC Re-authorization Act. With this law’s re-authorization, all districts participating in the national school meals programs were required to draft a school wellness policy.

This official policy includes writing that ensures a district’s intent to promote student and employee wellness, reduce childhood obesity, and provide assurance that school meals and other foods and beverages for purchase on school grounds during the school day meet USDA standards.

Congress passed the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 (Sec. 204 of Public Law 111-296) and added new provisions requiring districts and schools to:
  • Involve all stakeholders in the development of the wellness policy
  • Set goals for nutrition education, physical activity and nutrition guidelines
  • Measure implementation progress of wellness policy
  • Publicly report implementation progress of wellness policy
