Trent Wurtz (Chaska High School)
24-year veteran of the Chaska Police Department; 27th year overall
Why did you become a School Resource Officer? “I enjoy being around kids. Being there to help someone by giving them advice when someone is struggling; sharing my own struggles with them so we can relate to each other. Every day is so new. You see these students when they first enter the building as freshmen and you watch them grow and leave as seniors and they’re not the same person. They grow as people. It’s special.”
What can you accomplish as a SRO? “Being out in the community as a coach, a part of things, I feel like that built that trust with people. They see me in a different way no matter what they think of cops. I always say valuable communication with kids begins with dignity and respect. If you show them that, they might not always like what I say, but they listen, they start to understand and accept where I am coming from.”
What excites you about the start of a new school year? “The start of school is like a new chapter. It’s exciting. We have a new group of freshmen. New stories are being made.“
