During the most recent 2023 legislative session, Governor Walz and the Minnesota legislature granted school boards the authority to renew an existing operating referendum as part of this legislative session’s K-12 education funding omnibus bill. The authority is limited to existing operating referenda, and only allows for one renewal per referenda. Support for the change was based in large part on communities overwhelmingly supporting referendum renewals and the time and expense necessary to run a renewal campaign.
Eastern Carver County Schools is considering a board renewal of a $150.35 per pupil property tax levy scheduled to expire in June 2024. Renewal of this existing levy would generate no new taxes. The existing levy costs the homeowner of a $375,000 home, the average for our district, approximately $50 a year.
You can watch the board presentation and discussion here: https://vimeo.com/820738241?share=copy#t=9570. Questions and feedback are welcomed as the board considers renewal. The board can be reached at schoolboard@district112.org. Individual board contact information can be found here: https://www.district112.org/community/school-board.
The board is also hosting a listening session on the proposed renewal on Monday, June 5 from 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. at the Chanhassen High School Auditorium. A short presentation explaining the recommendation will be followed by a public comment period where residents can provide their feedback.
The board will take action on the recommendation at a special meeting following its June 12 work session.
